Chapter 6 Begins & Other Miscellany

Welcome to another chapter of I am bad at writing blog updates. Here's what is up:

    Chapter 6: Tango No. 2

The first couple pages of Chapter 6 are now live (and the title page, too!). I am optimistically hoping for 2 pages a week over the summer, which may not be sustainable, but we'll give it a shot. This is the first chapter to be (almost) completely plotted and scripted ahead of time so I'm sure that'll help.

    Chapter 5: Comixology

    Comixology!

It took awhile, but Chapter 5 is now available on the Comixology site.

    Indy PopCon 2015

I don't have a booth number yet, but we'll be on hand for our second appearance at the second annual Indy PopCon. I'll be at the R Squared Studios booth like last year. The Trouble and Dangerous Vol 1 Collection will be making it's debut. I'm getting it finalized now and it should go out to the printer (for a small initial run) by the end of the week. Pretty excited about this one! I'll also have Issue 5, and all the previous Issues along with stickers and posters and stuff.

    I think that's it!

    Indy PopCon

    June 26th - 28th, 2015

Just a quick note to let everyone know we'll be returning to the Indy PopCon this summer with the guys from RSquared Studios. More information to come, but we'll have Issues 1-5 of the comic as well as the Volume 1 Collection for sale along with the usual stickers, prints and anything else we can come up with.

It was a lot of fun last year so if you're in the area drop on by!

    Volume 1 Progress

I don't want to give too much away, but the Volume 1 trade is coming along nicely. All the pages are laid out and I've gather up all the art that'll be included. Just need to copy edit it and fine tune things a little.

Update: I made a typo in the word "copy" of copy edit. It's the little things that make life great...

    Trouble Burger

    Slam a Sack® and Eat Like a Hero™

    Trouble Buger Posters

I hope everyone is enjoying the Trouble Burger story line so far. It's been a lot of fun to create and design a ridiculous fast food restaurant like this. Since we missed the update this week we thought it might be fun to share some more art and panel details and maybe talk a little about the thing. Also it's high time there was a new blog post.

I really thought a lot about this for whatever reason. How it would actually happen if it was a serious situation with lawyers and all that. You probably noticed that Trouble Burger has it's own distinct logo and doesn't use any of the Trouble's personal branding. Likewise whenever he is in any sort of promotional situation (or being made into an action figure) the chest logo gets swapped out for the TB logo. This is all very much on purpose to keep some distance between the man and the business.

Kid Fury is also completely excluded (we did do the fries based on him, but out lawyers assure us that he has no legal grounds for recourse) as he is a minor, and under what I assume would be the law in Capital City his own heroic entity. It does get a little muddy in the case of sidekicks.

    On Gravitas & Rewrites

Chapter 4 (and to a lesser extent chapter 3) hasn't really been as funny as I'd hoped it would be. I definitely don't think it's as funny as the first two, and I'm (of course) working under the assumption that any of this has been funny at all. I did some pretty big rewrites with the hope that it not only makes for funnier dialog, but also streamlines the story a little and gets the page count under control.

It's definitely helped some, and I'm going to continue to look for ways to improve the writing. The biggest problem is that Gravitas as a character just isn't that inherently funny. A lot of the humor of this book is character driven and comes from their absurdity and their interactions with The Trouble. Gravitas is considerably less absurd then the previous two villains, and what were intended as his absurd qualities have't ever really come together properly (ie. executed poorly).

There's still some time, but I'm thinking we're probably a little to far into this chapter to really fundamentally change him. But like I said, I'm continually looking for ways to improve it. I do see these still as a work in progress. Anyway, hopefully the other qualities of this chapter are enough to carry it along.

    Also

We've nearly finalized the cover for Chapter 4. It's been added to the comic page, but here it is just for fun:

And last but not least, an unobstructed view of the nifty warehouse background from a couple pages back.

    Status Report

Hey everyone, sorry for the lack of communication and updates. Summer (among other things) has derailed the comic a little bit. Well, quite a bit. But we do plan to return in the fall with the conclusion to chapter 3/4 and brand new adventures. Watch the Facebook/Twitter pages and the RSS for updates!

    Update Schedule

Sorry everyone for the sporadic updates. Life, the holidays and various other things have made sticking to the update schedule a little harder then usual. The final page of Chapter 3 will be coming on the 19th.

Chapter 4 will be the conclusion of the story that was started in Chapter 3. I'd really like to have each chapter be a self-contained adventure but doing a 48 or so page chapter creates all sorts of logistical problems with the website and the eventual printing.

Again, sorry for the delays! The conclusion is coming as soon as possible. Chapter 4 will get under way in January and will hopefully be back to the weekly update schedule.

    All Sorts of Stuff

    Our First Review:

There's a little bit to talk about this week, first off we got reviewed on the Digital Strips podcast (which can be found here), due to some technical difficulties pretty much the whole episode is the review. The gist of it is that one of the two guys liked it and one of them didn't. Overall I feel pretty good about it. There's some fair criticisms there, but a lot of the review is focused on some pet-peeves which was kinda disappointing. Anywho, I appreciate the attention.

    The Kingdom

    The Kingdom Header

I wanted to give a formal shout-out and thank you to Jason Bienvenu creator of The Kingdom graphic novel for featuring a Trouble and Dangerous ad in his forthcoming issue #4. Jason does some pretty incredible work on his book and is coming off of a successful Kickstarter Campaign for a 6 part mini-series. Definitely check out his stuff, the first couple issues are going in sale this May.

    Making the Comic

*Reproduced from the old Blogspot blog*

It may or may not be apparent but the Trouble and Dangerous is created completely in Adobe Illustrator. As with anything this has some pros and cons. The major pro is that it's completely scalable and very easy to edit and tweak on-the-fly. I think the major drawback is that it can lack some of the expressiveness of a hand drawn comic and come out a little stiff sometimes as a result. This is something that will probably become less and less of an issue as the comic matures and I get better at making them/using Illustrator.

To give you a quick idea of what all is involved here's what page 2 of the comic looks like in "Outline" mode:

    Outlined Art

As you can see the Trouble is made of of several dozen ovals and what I like to think of as connective tissue. The characters are essentially modular in their construction, meaning they are made of of several main parts that are in turn made up of several more objects. It's a lot like how animators rig up 3D models with internal skeletons that allow them to move limbs and things around without having to redraw the character from scratch. I can basically move and rotate parts of the charator independently of each other and then fill back in the connective tissue. So for example if I want the charactor to look sad or defeated, I cam easily slump his head and shoulders to create the right kind of body language.

This actually illustrates another of the cons of doing things this way, there is a lot of production work before even the first comic is made. Introducing a new character also takes quite a bit of initial work.

This is a great way to learn Illustrator though, actually several versions have shipped since I first started this project. The newest version CS5 has 2 features that I am pretty excited about, first being the Width Tool that will allow me to make a stroke fatter or thinner as needed (This can be seen in the promo art posted in the last article). The other is the Draw Inside functionality that makes it much faster to create and use objects as clipping masks.
